Hanna Jacoba and Carl Esaias Rønnebergs headstones, an short story by Per Rønneberg Bremnes

Hanna Jacoba Hoffmann (1868-1905) and Carl Esaias Rønneberg (1854-1912) headstones were made by the Danish sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen (1863-1945). She probably was in close contact with Hanna Jacoba's mother, Karen Marie Bøe (1838-1908). This connection is learned from a letter between Anne Marie and Carl Esaias dated July 1908. In the letter it appears that the Hanna Jacobas headstone was not finished. Further more we read from the same letter that Carl Esaias had already ordered his own headstone.

Why the Rønneberg family used an Danish sculptor has been a question researched by the Odense Museum, among others. The answer to that question can possibly be found through Hanna Jacoba's father. His name was Frederik Christian Steenbuch Hoffmann (1827-1887). Even if he was born in Norway both of his surnames could have originated in Denmark. If that is the case, I am sure we have the connection between the Rønneberg family and the sculptor.

Hanna Jacobas headstones was placed at Ålesund church by the sculptor in 1910. Carl Esaias headstone was placed at the church in 1914. A great monument to the man who laid down the foundation stone of the Ålesund church.

Svaret fines kanskje i Hanna Jacobas far.

They are buried at ”Vestre kirkegård” on Ålesund kirke. On Hannas grave the inscription is from Psalm 61-V. On Carl Esaias it is 23 – V
